Beith 0 Talbot 1 ( H-T 0-0)

Beith paid the penalty in this cup tie as Talbot edged them out in a match where two spot kicks proved crucial to the outcome.
It was the Bot who settled first & made the early running as they shot down the Bellsdale slope. Frize was fortunate to escape an early booking when he went right through Hyslop 30 yards from goal. Graham Wilson took the resultant free kick & got it up & over the wall but straight at Grindlay who made an easy save.
The home side came close in the 7th minute. Frize read Leishman’s long throw & intercepted it on the right wing. The ball was swung into the centre where McPherson ran onto it but his shot lacked fizz & was easily saved by Leishman.
A minute later Hyslop looped a header wide when he met McGoldrick’s free kick inside the penalty area.
It looked to be advantage Beith in the 11th minute. A ball into the heart of the penalty area was cleared but cannoned off a player at the edge of the area & fell kindly for McGlinchey inside the box. He went down under Lyle’s challenge & the ref pointed to the spot. Christie struck it on target but Leishman went the right way & dived low to his left to turn it wide.
Talbot threatened the Beith goal on the quarter hour mark. McCracken led a counter-attack down the left before finding Milliken. He cut the ball back into the area where Young met it sweetly & his low drive was goal bound until it was blocked off a defender. It came back out to Young who squared it across to Steven Wilson who lifted a shot over the bar from 18 yards.
Beith’s defence had to be at the top of their game in the 24th minute when Milliken gathered out on the right & whipped a tremendous cross into the centre. Graham Wilson went for it at the near post but was just beaten to the ball by a whisker by McLaughlin who headed clear.
Frize had a lucky escape soon after. Already on a yellow card he blatantly tripped Steven Wilson as he raced forward but the ref decided it wasn’t worth a 2nd caution.
The penalty apart, Beith hadn’t offered much of a threat but they did come close on the half hour mark. A Beith corner was headed clear by Boyle but came out to J Wilson who met it on the volley & sent a shot just over the bar.
MacDonald became the 2nd Beith player cautioned when he up-ended McCracken as he bore down on the Beith box, resulting in a free kick 20 yards out. G Wilson took it but his shot clipped the top of the wall.
In the 42nd minute Beith almost capitalised on a slice of luck inside the Talbot box. McGlinchey’s mishit shot broke into the path of McPherson 15 yards out but he hesitated for a fraction & was challenged as he hit it with the ball spinning high into the air where it was gathered by Leishman.
The referee again erred on the side of leniency a minute before the interval. MacDonald should have received a 2nd yellow card for his late challenge on Milliken but the ref kept his cards in his pocket & contented himself with awarding the free kick. McCracken fired in a low shot from 30 yards that was blocked clear & the sides went in goal less at the interval.
The opening spell of the 2nd half was evenly contested with both sides having half chances to take the lead. Firstly Milliken cut into the area from the right & fired on target but sent his shot straight at Grindlay then down the other end MacGowan met McGlinchey’s hanging cross but hit a tame shot at Leishman.
Beith made the game’s 1st change in the 58th minute when Burke came on in place of McMenamin.
Graham Wilson very nearly provided the breakthrough in the 61st minute. He jinked inside the box off the left wing before firing narrowly over the bar.
Milliken picked up a yellow card in the 64th min for dissent when Beith won a free kick out on the right. MacGowan curled an in swinger into the box which Milliken headed over the bar. When the corner came over McLaughlin ran onto it but steered his free header over the bar from 8 yards.
Beith made a double switch in the 67th minute with McLean on for McPherson & Watt replacing MacDonald.
Two minutes later Talbot had a chance to take the lead. Graham Wilson released Young in space on the left of the area. He might have gone for the shot but instead opted to square it across the face of goal & the defence were able to clear.
Talbot enjoyed a bit of good fortune in the 70th minute. Watt got free on the right & sped a dangerous low ball across the 6-yard area. Christie was lurking unmarked at the back post but the ball clipped off McGoldrick’s heel & out to Harvey who completed the clearance.
A few minutes later Leishman produced his 2nd crucial save of the afternoon. A corner from the right came over into a packed penalty box & McLaughlin met it to direct an overhead kick on target. It looked a goal all the way until Leishman threw out his right arm to turn it away.
Tucker made his 1st change in the 81st minute with Shankland coming on for the tiring Milliken.
Shankland was only on the pitch two minutes before being flattened by J Wilson who received a yellow card for his troubles.
With 5 minutes to go Tucker made his 2nd change with White replacing McCracken in midfield.
Young nearly won it for Talbot soon after. Boyle met a ball in from the left & headed it back across goal where Young’s volley flew just past the right upright with the keeper beaten.
Just when it looked as though the game was heading for a replay Talbot made the breakthrough. White gathered by the right touchline & slipped the ball up the wing. The Beith defence were looking for an offside flag that never came & G Wilson carried on into the area where he took it wide of the keeper who sent him crashing to the deck. The ref pointed to the spot but there was a lengthy delay before it could be taken to allow treatment for Grindlay. The delay didn’t faze STEVEN WILSON who coolly stepped up & slotted the penalty home.
Beith threw bodies forward as the game moved into injury time but it was too little, too late & the Bot defence stood firm to knock the holders out.
This was an impressive away win against tough opposition & hopefully Talbot can kick on from this & maintain a similar level of performance next Saturday when they visit Hurlford in the league.

Pollok 2 Talbot 0 (H-T 0-0)

Talbot failed to turn up for their 1st competitive game of the new year & could have few complaints as they slumped to a 2-0 loss away to Pollok.
Pollok ought to have taken the lead within 2 minutes. A slack pass from McGoldrick gifted the ball to McCann who raced past Lyle before cutting the ball back across goal. R Winters ran onto it but scooped his shot over the bar from 6 yards.
The game had a hurried feel to it with neither side able to settle on the ball or exert any dominance.
Talbot’s first effort at goal came in the 14th minute when G Wilson met Harvey’s cross & steered a header wide of the left post.
Pollok gradually began to take control of the match but without producing much in the final third.
In the 23rd minute Talbot came close to opening the scoring. Williamson conceded a free kick out on the right for a foul on Shankland & he delivered the ball into the area where Hyslop’s header flew just wide of the right post with the aid of a slight deflection.
At the other end Williamson had a decent effort for the home side when he tried to place a shot from 20 yards that curled wide of the left post.
R Winters squandered an almost identical chance to the one he’d missed in the 2nd minute after 32 mins. McCann got free on the right & fired a low cutback into the centre which Winters met but lifted over the bar.
McCracken became the 1st player booked when he was cautioned in the 39th min for a late challenge on Sideserf & he was soon joined in the ref’s notebook by Evans for a foul on Shankland.
Talbot ended the half strongly & twice came close to taking the lead. The first chance came from a corner out on the left. Shankland lifted it beyond the back post where Harvey looped a header back across that beat Longmuir but Evans headed it off the line.
In the last minute of the half Shankland nodded the ball down into the path of G Wilson & he surged in on goal; however Longmuir was quickly off his line & made a good stop from his low drive & the sides went in goal less at the interval.
Harvey became the 2nd Bot player booked when he received a caution for a late challenge on Mackenzie in the 53rd minute. He was unable to continue & Pollok made their first change with Hepburn on in his place.
The first effort at goal in the 2nd half came in the 56th minute when McCann drifted in from the right wing & sent a shot wide of Leishman’s left post.
The opening goal came in the 61st minute & in keeping with the quality of the game it was a messy affair. Longmuir’s long punt down the centre was missed in the air by the Talbot defence & bounced through to D WINTERS who had the easy task of sliding it past the helpless Leishman.
Tucker responded by making a double substitution with the two wide players, Milliken & Hyslop being replaced by Young & Steven Wilson.
A minute or so later Talbot made a further change with Stevenson on in midfield to replace McCracken.
It was now Talbot’s turn to dominate territory & possession but there was a lack of quality & composure in the final third & the Bot were unable to turn dominance into chances. Time & again speculative crosses were thrown into the box only to be headed clear under no real pressure.
Pollok made a change in the 83rd minute with Hanlon coming on for R Winters.
Graham Wilson picked up a caution in the 85th minute for persistent fouling.
Any lingering hopes of a Talbot comeback were ended in the 87th minute when Pollok added their second. Once again Talbot didn’t properly clear a Longmuir punt down the centre. This time it was headed out but only as far as Williamson who headed it back into the area. D Winters latched onto it & coolly chipped the ball through to ROWAN who ran in behind & took it past Leishman before rolling it home.
A bad day at the office for Talbot who never quite got going and the Bot will have to lift their game for next Saturday when Rob Roy visit Beechwood.

Ardrossan Winton Rovers v Auchinleck Talbot

A goal in each half was enough for Talbot to triumph in this festive friendly, but like their competitive season the scoreline could have been a lot higher if they had cashed in on the numerous chances that they fashioned throughout the game.

There was a few tweeks to the starting line-up with Brian Hewitt replacing Andy Leishman in nets, while Martin McGoldrick moved to right back and Neil McPherson slotted in beside Danny Boyle. James Latta was handed a start after a couple of months on the injury list while Dylan Pooler and Dylan Stevenson were given the nod.

Talbot were quick off the mark and in 2 minutes Steven Wilson threaded Keir Milliken through on goals but the stand-side linesman was quick to flag. Winton were looking rather dangerous up the right hand side and when a long weighted ball was sent into the Talbot area Hewitt who had came out his box to clear the danger actually fluffed his kick which fell to Caddis who’s 35 yard first time shot blew well past the empty net.

Talbot were having the better of the opening stages and on numerous occasions they had the home side well pinned back. Dwayne Hyslop  had a couple of decent chances but ballooned a shot well over and did the same with a Stevenson cross. You could sense that Talbot were going to open the scoring and this came about on the 33rd minute when Steven Wilson picked out the unmarked Gordon Pope and he rifled a daisy cutter past Mullen from 25 yards.

Near the end of the first half Talbot squandered two good chances when Milliken pounced on a defensive error which broke to Stevenson but he had little chance to control the ball and Mullen did well to block the danger. Right on the half time whistle Pooler should have scored when he darted into the box to collect a through ball but shot straight into the keepers midriff.

Graham Wilson replaced Keir Milliken at half time and seven minutes later Shankland and McCracken came on for Latta and Hyslop. A minute after the substitutions Colligan blew a great chance for the home side when he cut in from the right but hurried his shot past Hewitt and well past the target. This was the last we saw of the home side as an attacking force and on the 65th minute Craig McCracken doubled the scoreline when a drop of the shoulder got him enough space to hammer the ball low past Mullen.

The game finished with Talbot camped around the home goalmouth and two decent chances fell to Shankland. One when he was crowded out by the defense before he got a shot off and another when he did get the ball on target but shot tamely into the hands of the keeper. With minutes remaining Graham Wilson was unlucky to add to the scoring when he ghosted into the area leaving three players in his wake but his finished effort was poorly hit and the keeper saved easily.

TALBOT: Hewitt, McGoldrick, Pope, McPherson, Boyle, S.Wilson, Stevenson, Hyslop (McCracken 52), Pooler, Milliken (G.Wilson 45), Latta (Shankland 52). Sub not used Lyle.

Troon v Auchinleck Talbot

Talbot ended their competitive fixtures of 2016 on a high note with a valuable away win at Troon.
Troon made the stronger start but squandered a couple of good chances in the opening spell, which they were to rue later on.
The home side should’ve gone one ahead within 2 minutes. A simple ball up the right found Robertson running clear inside the Bot area & he squared it across goal. Moore only had to sweep it home but completely mishit it.
Talbot’s first attack came in the 5th minute. Collins failed to cut out a ball down the right & Milliken raced onto it & whipped a great cross over which Barbour had to turn behind with Shankland waiting to pounce; though Talbot could make nothing of the resultant corner.
Two minutes later McCracken did well out on the left, first winning the ball & then floating a diagonal cross over which Hyslop just failed to connect with in the centre.
Troon very nearly took the lead in the 14th minute. Brown chipped a ball over the Bot defence to send Nisbet through on goal. Leishman was quickly off his line to make the block but the ball cannoned off McGoldrick & looked to be heading in for an own goal until McGoldrick raced back to clear it from the goal mouth.
Two minutes later Troon missed their 2nd sitter. Muir whipped a low cross in from the right which Leishman failed to cut out. Robertson met it in front of goal but somehow managed to steer his header well wide of the left post.
Junior football wouldn’t be complete without puzzling ref decisions & the man in the middle got it wrong in the 20th minute when he booked McGoldrick for winning the ball cleanly.
The opening goal came in the 25th minute. Graham Wilson skipped past the challenge of Collins & raced down the left only to be impeded by Barbour. Shankland took the free kick & curled it perfectly to the far post where BOYLE climbed to head home from close range.
The game’s 1st substitution came before the game could re-start, with Forsyth on for Robertson for the hosts.
The longer the half went the more comfortable Talbot looked with Troon offering little threat. The home side had a flurry of pressure in the closing minutes of the half but without testing Leishman.
Troon opened the 2nd half brightly with Nisbet’s speculative effort forcing a save out of Leishman soon after the re-start but this proved a false dawn.
Graham Wilson came close to putting Talbot two ahead in the 52nd minute. He surged down the left, riding a couple of challenges before racing into the box & firing just over the bar.
A minute later, the game turned decisively in Talbot’s favour. Milliken raced onto a pass in behind the defence & as he went to break into the area was wrestled down by McKnight. The ref sent Troon’s centre half off for denying a goal scoring opportunity & awarded Talbot a free kick on the dee at the edge of the box. SHANKLAND took it & as he’s done so often this season he rocketed a beauty of a shot beyond the wall & past the despairing dive of Semple to put Talbot 2-0 ahead.
Troon made their 2nd change just before the hour mark when Maley came on in place of Brown.
McCracken almost extended Talbot’s lead in the 62nd minute when he turned Brown inside the box before firing over the bar.
The game was wrapped up in the 66th minute when Talbot grabbed their third. White slid the ball out to GRAHAM WILSON on the left & he showed a cool head, cutting inside past Brown & slotting it past Semple.
Within a minute it ought to have been four nil. The Troon defence were posted missing when a ball found Milliken free on the right & he drew Semple before squaring it across for Shankland who hoisted the bar over the bar.
Tucker made a triple substitution in the 68th minute with Shankland, White, & Graham Wilson making way for Pooler, Stevenson & Steven Wilson.
Troon did well to keep their heads up & battling but the game was long lost & Talbot looked well in control.
In the 82 minute Troon made their final change when Curragh replaced Muir & the sub squandered a good chance to grab a consolation two minutes from time. A ball in from the left found him free in the area but he hesitated just a fraction & when he went to hit it Boyle put enough pressure on him to force the mistake and he slid it past the right post.
This was a very good away win for Talbot and puts the Bot within touching distance of the league leaders. Here’s hoping for a good start to 2017 for Talbot and all their supporters.

Troon – Semple, Barbour, Brown, McKnight, Collins, Chatham, Muir, Armstrong, Nisbet, Robertson, Moore
Subs – Curragh, Forsyth, Maley, Fraser

Talbot – Leishman, Lyle, Harvey, McGoldrick, Boyle, McCracken, Hyslop, White, Shankland, G Wilson, Milliken
Subs – S Wilson, Stevenson, Pooler, McPherson, Latta
