Wigton v Talbot Preview

It’s a big game this Saturday when Talbot travel to face current South of Scotland league leaders Wigton & Bladnoch at Trammerford Park in the 1st preliminary round of the William Hill Scottish Cup. Talbot will be firm favourites to progress into the next round but they will be taking nothing for granted.

Allan McLuckie pointed out “Wigton are at the top of their league for a reason and with four wins out of four they are certainly on a good run. We heard about their 9-1 defeat at Girvan but the word on the street tells us they were missing a few players and you don’t need to look far to see how well our pre-season panned out.  Wigton are a mix of players who have been entrenched in the SOSL system and some decent youngsters who have been in the youth set up at QOS and Stranraer so they will be formidable opponents”

Talbot’s season continued on Wednesday night with a hard fought point at Glenafton in the Ardagh Cup and Allan was rather upbeat about events. “This was certainly a game of two halves played in atrocious weather. We very poor in the first half where we gave away the ball too easily and I felt we were being bullied in the middle of the park. At half time I have to be honest and say we were lucky not to be down a couple of more goals. Second half we weathered an opening 10 minutes of Glens pressure and then kicked in. I felt we had a few decent chances before we were awarded a penalty where enough will be said about that, but it was pleasing to see big Martin get his head to a great equalizer.”

Talbot completed the night by signing former Killie and St Mirren youth player Dylan Pooler which pleased Allan. “Dylan comes highly rated to us and when you consider he has been capped at three age levels with Scotland I think we have bagged ourselves a good one. We have to remember that he has played all his football in youth game so it might be a bit of a culture shock playing in the Junior’s. On saying that he has fared well in his two matches and has got stuck in, I’m really looking forward to seeing Dylan progress.

Allan finished off by thanking the Talbot fans who braved the terrible weather on Wednesday night. “I wouldn’t have put a milk bottle out on Wednesday night but a good support came up from the village to cheer us on. You have no idea how much the players appreciate the backing. Thank you”

The officials for the match are Referee: Mike Taylor and assistants Scott Love and Brian Comerford. Weather report is cloudy with a 16% chance of rain, the temperature will be 16c.

RECOMMENDATIONS & RULES FROM WIGTOWN & BLADNOCH FC

  • Unfortunately, we are a fairly small club, this means that our car parking is fairly limited.

    As a result, if buses are coming from your end, we recommend they either;

  • (A) Drop off fans/players/committee in the town and they then walk down before parking in town (we recommend the Lorry Park on South Main Street), or;

(B) Drop off at Trammondford Park (our ground) and then park in town (once again, the Lorry Park is recommended).
The ground is actually out of the town and unfortunately, Trammondford Park itself doesn’t have a postcode but the house next to it has the following postcode: DG8 9BT.

3) The club’s normal code of conduct will apply, this can be found on our website.

4) We would like to stress that Alcohol and Drugs are not permitted inside the ground. They will be confiscated and being excessively under the influence may result in removal from the ground.

5)Smoking is allowed.

6) There will be a police presence.

7) We recommend visiting the Galloway Bar in Wigtown on South Main Street. Small, standard pub but the pint and atmosphere in there make it well worth a visit.

If you like a craft beer, we recommend a Pub/Restaurant in the town called Craft.

Talbot sign Pooler

Talbot signed former Kilmarnock and St Mirren youngster Dylan Pooler after Wednesday’s game against Glenafton. The talented youngster who has represented Scotland at Under 15, 16 and 17 level has been impressive in his two starts in the Ardagh Cup matches. Dylan is now Talbot’s fifth signing this season. Welcome to Beechwood Dylan.

Glenafton v Talbot Preview

Talbot travel to Loch Park on Wednesday evening to take on Glenafton in the second game of the Ardagh club knowing full well a decent result would set them up for a good chance of qualification. The Glens were winners on Saturday after a visit to Kello Rovers and like the Talbot they had to work hard for the points.

Allan McLuckie was upbeat about the 4-1 win at Burnside Park stating “All credit to the Muirkirk lad’s they had a game plan to defend in numbers and stuck to that plan throughout the match. We managed to grind them down near the end and the score line reflects the possession we enjoyed.”

Asked about the overall performance Allan commented “It was a good shift as Muirkirk proved to be a stubborn outfit. Hammering lower league sides might be good for the fans but in reality you learn nothing from these games. The new boys bedded in well and already proved that they are going to be an asset to the team.”

Talbot  face a tougher challenge this Wednesday and although they have a good record at Loch Park they will need to be at their best to come away with the points. Allan added “ The Glens have had the same sort of pre-season as ourselves struggling with injuries and players on holiday, but they have been adding to their squad and they have had some impressive signings.  It’s going to be a tough match.

Glenafton have added former Stranraer player Ryan Borris and Alloa defender Kyle McAusland. They have also dabbled with youth signing 21 year old keeper Blair Lochead and Bonnyton kid Andy Hunter.

The match will be officiated by Callum Scott and assistants Shaun Ferguson and Grant Middleton. The weather on Wednesday evening will be showers with temperature sitting at 11o. Wrap up well.

Talbot physio Mick McGinn rewarded his sponsor Davie Wilson by handing over his League Winners medal at the Kilmarnock match. Davie is one of a group of supporters and businesses that help Talbot financially by sponsoring a player or member of the coaching staff.

This was a lovely gesture by Mick and much appreciated by Davie. If you would like to sponsor a player then please get in touch with Colin Chisholm or any member of the committee.

Allan’s Angle

Firstly sorry for the late article but due to work commitments I was unable to get in touch with the website but better late than never. Unfortunately injuries are plaguing us early on and it didn’t help with the injury sustained by Steven Wilson against Bo’ness. Steven picked up a slight knock which needs rested and we fully expect to see him out for a couple of weeks however Dwayne and Graham started light running at training and both should be in back with the rest of the guys within the next few weeks.  On the signing front we are still actively pursuing players and hope to add a couple of new faces in the coming weeks. We have been linked with a number of players but this is speculation by the media and the club will keep all our supporters up to speed as soon as anything happens.

The players are looking to get back into action and champing at the bit for Saturdays game.

The officials for the match are: Referee Ronnie Strain, Assistants Ross Nelson, Matthew Lee

Muirkirk v Talbot Preview

Talbot head to Burnside Park in Muirkirk for their first competitive match of the 2016/17 season on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 thumping by Bo’ness United. Injuries and non-appearances hampered the selection prospects of manager Tommy Sloan who had to name himself as a substitute and with the loss of six of last years squad to pick from the outcome was inevitable considering the the class of the opposition.

The only pleasing point of the Bo’ness game was the fact that all four of this season’s new signings played a big part in the match. Our only concern was a facial injury to Willie Lyle, but he should be okay for selection this Saturday. Due to work commitments we couldn’t contact Allan McLuckie so at this moment we are unaware of any signings or injury updates, but we do know that Dwayne Hyslop and Martin McGoldrick should be fit while Graham Wilson needs a bit more recuperation.

The rumour mill has us linked to a striker and a good source intimated that signing terms could be agreed. However the player in question was mention in dispatches that he was turning out for a South of Scotland side so at this moment we are unable to confirm any information.

As for Saturdays match we go into this encounter as massive favourites against probably the youngest side in the ADL. Manager George Greirson has put together a decent squad as he aims to emulate Muirkirk’s last season exploits. The “Kirk” have been busy pre-season with a 1-0 win over Creetown from the SOSL but lost out 2-0 to Ayr United Academy and last Saturday were on the end of a 6-1 defeat up at Hill O’ Beath.

The weather for the match looks like being dry with light cloud with the temperature sitting at 16o with a 40% chance of rain. Admission to the match is £6 and £3.
