Auchinleck Talbot v Blantyre Victoria

DOMINANT TALBOT IN FRONT OF GOAL

Report: Jim McAuley, Photography: Craig McGhee, Media: Lee Conn.

Talbot fans leaving Beechwood on Saturday will be wondering if they had just watched a game of attrition as the visitors defended stoutly or was it something more like a game that was atrocious as once again Talbot failed to turn their dominance into goals. In reality they were undoubtedly the better side carving out a number of chances but once again poor finishing nearly took them to extra time as they huffed and puffed against a hard working Blantyre side who held out until the 87th minute.

Talbot had made a couple of changes to the team that had drawn with Arthurlie with Ally Park becoming the fifth player to pull on the right back jersey while Aiden Wilson was drafted into the central defence. Vic’s had made a few changes themselves bringing in Sam Archibald from the youth team and making his debut in midfield was 17 year old Pearse Carroll who had just been released from Falkirk.

The visitors kicked off towards the Coal Road end and within seven minutes they had forced the first corner of the game, but the delivery was poor which gave Boylan the chance to control the ball and sweep it up field towards Smith, however Jones was alert to the danger and ushered the ball back to his keeper. All credit to Smith who chased the pass back down and harassed Orr into striking his clearance into his legs where the ball spun out towards the byline.

Smith was the quickest to react by collecting the loose ball and sending it into the danger area where McLew managed to clear, but only into the path of Park who headed the ball back to Smith where the strikers lob come cross found Boyan lurking in the box and he in turn turned the ball past Orr and into the path of Thomson who tried to steer the ball into the net but somehow Jones got his head to the attempt and put the ball out for a corner. From the resulting award Wardrope swept a superb ball into the danger area and although Armstrong found himself unmarked he headed well over the bar.

Talbot were enjoying the bulk of the early play the Blantyre side had a bit of belief about them and forced a number of corners which the home defenders dealt with the in swinging cross balls with relative ease. As the game continued the home side were finding openings down the right wing and on 20 minutes Boylan found Park making a run inside the Vics defence and his short pass was collected by the defender but his shot sailed harmlessly past Orr’s goals.

Park was proving to be Talbot’s main outlet and was back in action minutes later when he was sent up the wing by Armstrong and although his cross was too high for Boylan it fell into the path of the unmarked Thomson who failed to control the ball and his half heart attempt trundled towards Orr who decided to tip the ball past the post.

With the end of the first half looming Talbot pulled of the move of the game where Boylan laid off a Park clearance into the path of Thomson who in turn sent Smith on his way and although his cross was a bit on the high side the ball fell to Gillies who like Thomson failed to put the chance to good use.

Gibson was the first to go into the book for a late tackle on Smith minutes before the referee blew for the end of proceedings.

Talbot came out the traps in the opening minutes when a Boylan header sent Smith into the box but dwelt on the pass to Wardrope who when he did receive it did well to keep the ball in play and as it was cleared  by Archibald it fell to Boylan who rifled his shot over the bar. In the 55th minute Talbot had a claim for a hand ball when Thomson’s shot from the edge of the box hit a Vics player but the referee waved play on. The game had become bogged down in the visitors half as Talbot chipped away without troubling the Blantyre defence. Jones found himself in the book in the 64th minute soon followed by Talbot’s Thomson as the match got a wee bit physical.

In the 73rd minute Wardrope did well to fashion a chance but his effort had no pace to it and it rolled gratefully into Orr’s hands. Talbot made a change on the 75th minute as Boyd replaced Thomson and it was the ex-Meadow man who was to separate the sides in the 87th minute. A long ball down the wing by McPherson looked to be intercepted by McLew but from nowhere Smith appeared to wrestle the ball from him, cut into the box and his pass was stroked into the net by Boyd via the boot of Jones to give Talbot the lead

A minute later all hell broke loose when McLew was shown the red card after having a rush of blood to the head and crashing into Armstrong. A full scale melee then took place between both sets of players with McPherson picking up a card along with Kyle McDonald. The visitors had the Talbot fans holding their breath when K.McDonald stroked a great ball through the Talbot defence and past Glavin’s post. Boyd should have added another when Smith again battled his way into the box but this time his pass to Boyd saw the attacker get the ball lost amongst his feet and as it broke loose Langan skied his shot.

With the game time running down there were last minute substitutions where  McMillan replaced Boylan while Smith was replaced by Abet. The referee’s whistle was heartily accepted by the vast majority of the crowd who had no appetite for another 30 minutes of purgatory.

Auchinleck Talbot v Arthurlie

JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Report, Murray Steele, Photography Craig McGhee, Media Lee Conn.

Talbot snatched a draw from the jaws of victory after a Jekyll and Hyde performance saw them go from cruise control to hanging on at the final whistle.

The Bot couldn’t have started any better. In the 1st minute they won a corner down the right that the defence only cleared back out to Wardrope and he fired wide from the edge of the area.

A few minutes later Wardrope surged between two Lie players and made for the box. He tried to find Smith in space to his left but his pass was cut out.

Nine minutes in and Kerr received a caution for a heavy challenge on Wardrope. He tried to continue but couldn’t shake off the knock and was replaced in the 13th minute by Lennox.

In the 16th minute Talbot’s pressure paid off when they won a penalty. McPherson lifted it long down the left for the run of Thomson and as he raced onto it inside the box he was clumsily up-ended by Magee. ROSS SMITH took the spot kick and fired it past the keeper inside the left post to put Talbot 1-0 ahead.

Magee had injured himself conceding the penalty and he was replaced by Greenwood.

Talbot were gifted a corner out of nothing in the 26th minute when McKinven sliced a clearance behind. Langan’s deep corner came to Boylan on the right and he volleyed it back across goal. There were loud appeals for hand-ball but the ref waved play on.

A minute later Talbot doubled their lead. A shy on the left came to Smith and he volleyed an accurate cross to the far post where BRYAN BOYLAN steered a header past McKinven.

It was all Talbot and the Bot had the visitors defence stretched again in the 32nd minute. Boyle knocked a good ball up the right to free Boylan and he played it early trying to find Thomson but the defence did well to cut it out.

Two minutes later Leyden clipped Langan’s heels as he raced forward then kicked the ball away resulting in a booking. Langan played the free kick into the near post area where it just cleared the head of Slooves.

At this stage it looked to be a question of how many for Talbot and the Bot came close again in the 37th minute. Langan intercepted the ball and sped down the left before cutting it back inside to find Boyle. He had time & space and let a screamer fly from 30 yards that just flew over the bar.

McNeil became the 3rd Lie player in the book when he was cautioned in the 38th minute for a foul on Boylan. Langan played the resultant free kick up the left to Boylan who saw his shot blocked. Talbot kept the pressure on and switched play out to the right where Armstrong forced a corner. When Langan’s corner came over Lennox met it and headed it back into the mix where the defence managed to clear.

Talbot’s next chance came when Armstrong whipped over a good cross that the defence were only able to head out to Boylan 20 yards out and his shot slipped just wide of the left hand post.

In the 42nd minute Arthurlie made a change with Sugafara replacing Kangi-Soukpe.

A minute from the interval Talbot had a good chance to extend their lead. Thomson won a corner down the right and Langan delivered it into the centre where Lennox ran onto it unchallenged but didn’t make clean contact – glancing his header well wide.

Into added time Talbot had one last chance. Arthurlie were guilty of over-playing inside their own area and Thomson nicked in to steal it before firing wide of the left post.

Arthurlie made a change during the interval with Bradley coming on.

The sub got the benefit of a dubious call in the 49th minute when he appeared to foul Smith whilst they were both lying on the deck. The ball went loose and broke to Boylan in space but the ref then blew up and awarded Arthurlie the foul.

The visitors were forced into a change in the 53rd minute when McKinven went down injured with Clarke coming on as replacement keeper.

In the 59th minute McPherson drove a diagonal ball from left to right that the defence failed to cut out. It came to Boylan inside the box and he fired a low drive on target that was comfortably held by Clarke.

Arthurlie had offered little up to this point but gave Talbot a warning in the 61st minute. Langan conceded a free kick for a challenge on Bolger out on the right. Docherty swung it into the centre where it was cleared but straight back out to him. He played it back into the area toward McGuigan who swivelled and steered a shot just wide of the right post.

In the 63rd minute Langan raced down the left and got to the bye line before cutting it back into the centre but it didn’t break Talbot’s way and Arthurlie swept to the other end when a long diagonal ball cleared Armstrong’s head allowing Kerr to race onto it and fire a low shot on target that Glavin held at his near post.

A minute later Talbot nearly had their third. Langan’s cross from the left took a deflection and landed at the feet of Smith just outside the near post. He fired it on target but couldn’t beat Clarke from a tight angle with the keeper blocking it behind for a corner.

In the 67th minute Boyle won the ball in the Lie half and spread play out wide right to find Boylan. He cut in on his left foot and curled a cross into the centre that was fractionally too high for Thomson who got his head to it but couldn’t keep it down.

The game was turned on its head a minute later when Talbot conceded a needless penalty. Arthurlie won a free kick down the standside which Docherty took quickly – lifting it into the area. There appeared no danger as Glavin came to claim it but he flapped it away and then chased after it and caught Kerr and the ref pointed to the spot. DYKES took the penalty and sent Glavin the wrong way to make it 2-1.

The goal energised Arthurlie whilst giving Talbot the jitters and Talbot had a let off in the 73rd minute. An attempted shot was blocked on the left of the area and broke kindly to Kerr who drilled it low across goal but there was too much on it for anyone to get on the end of it.

In the 76th minute Bolger skipped past Gillies and played a dangerous low ball across the face of goal that Glavin turned away at the expense of a corner. Talbot now made a change with McMillan coming on for Armstrong.

Lennox had his name taken in the 78th minute for what appeared to be an innocuous challenge on Docherty.

Nine minutes from time a ball out left found Kerr racing for the bye line but McMillan got back to make the tackle and put it behind for the corner. When the corner came over it was only partially cleared and Arthurlie switched it out to the right where Docherty won a free kick near the corner flag. He whipped the free kick into the centre where Glavin clutched it under the bar.

Talbot now made a double change with Smith & Thomson making way for Boyd & Black.

In the 86th minute Black played it out wide left for Lennox whose low ball across goal was touched behind by Clarke. Talbot’s attempted short corner didn’t come off but it broke back to Langan whose cross to the far post was headed wide by Slooves.

With a minute to go Boyle received a booking for a foul midway inside his own half on Leyden. Docherty took it and flighted it into the area where it was headed out for a shy on the right. When the shy came in the Bot defence were found wanting. The throw coming into the near post where it was laid back into the path of Roulston who had plenty of time & space to pick out a pass to the far post where GREENWOOD bundled home from close range to level it.

Deep into injury time Talbot looked to have a stonewall penalty appeal turned down. Black curled over a great cross from the left that Boylan looked set to meet until he was shoved in the back but the referee ignored Talbot’s appeals.

In the final action of the match Arthurlie nearly stole all 3 points. They were awarded a free kick 40 yards out for handball. Docherty took it and angled a dangerous ball across the box that McNeil just failed to connect with and the game ended 2-2.

A disappointing result for Talbot who had the game in the bag but let it slip. Talbot are back in action today when a Davie Gillies select faces off against Graham Wilson’s 11 in G’s testimonial at Beechwood.

Talbot are back in competitive action next Saturday when they host Blantyre Vics in the South Challenge cup but as I’m getting married that afternoon Jim will be back on reporting duties.

Auchinleck Talbot v Clydebank

SHOT SHY TALBOT PUNISHED AGAIN

Report: Murray Steele, Media: Lee Conn, Photography: Craig McGhee

Talbot’s faltering start to the season continued with a single goal loss to Clydebank at Beechwood.

The Bot started positively and in the 2nd minute Langan fed it out right to Boyd whose low drive was turned round the post by Hughes. When Wardrope’s corner came over it flew just over McPherson in the centre.

In the 5th minute Talbot nearly gifted Clydebank the lead. Wardrope’s slack pass at the back went straight to Little who raced into the area before sliding it left toward Graham but Henry was quickly off his line to make the block.

Action then swept to the other end as Talbot countered through Thomson down the right. He pulled it back into the path of Armstrong who hammered a shot from 18 yards that Hughes brilliantly saved – tipping it onto the bar and over.

The Bot’s next effort at goal saw Langan find Thomson on the left of the area and Hughes saved his low drive on target.

In the 25th minute Talbot won a free kick wide left when Smith was caught by Hodge. Wardrope took it short to Smith who returned it to Wardrope and his cross into the centre was glanced wide by McPherson.

Talbot then won a couple of corner in quick succession from the 2nd of which Langan fired over the bar from the edge of the area.

The Bot fans thought Talbot were in on goal in the 28th minute. Niven’s poor pass was intercepted by Smith who threaded it through to Thomson who raced for the box but Niven got back and did enough to halt Thomson.

It should have been one nil to Clydebank in the 31st minute. Slooves took a heavy 1st touch and Gallacher took advantage to slide a pass through to Little who had time & space 15 yards out but blazed his shot way over.

A few minutes later Clydebank won a corner out on the right and when it came Talbot failed to deal with it in the centre but managed to scramble it clear at the back post.

The half ended with Clydebank in the ascendancy and they had 2 decent chances to take the lead.

These came in the 43rd minute when Gallacher’s dangerous cross was headed clear but fell straight to Little who tried to pass it inside the left post with Henry getting down well to turn it away. Clydebank retrieved it and switched play out to the left where Gallacher was in space but he fired wide of the right post.

The visitors started the 2nd half brightly and in the 49th minute Low broke forward and tried his luck from 30 yards with a powerful drive that rose over the bar.

In the 51st minute a ball down the left found Gallacher running free and he swept it low across the box where Slooves turned it behind. When the corner came over deep beyond the back post Niven guided a header back into the goal mouth that Talbot managed to scramble clear.

Four mins later Talbot conceded a free kick 30 yards out which Gallacher flighted into the box and Niven headed over the bar.

Talbot hadn’t got going but in the 56th minute they won a free kick on the left that was played into the path of Wilson who drilled it low first time into the centre but the defence did well to cut it out.

Johnstone became the first name in the book when he was cautioned in 61 mins for a shirt tug on Langan.

In the 63rd minute a shy from the right found Wardrope and he fed it inside to Boyd who fired over the bar.

Down the other end Talbot conceded a free kick 35 yards out for handball. Low took it and went for goal but it went straight at Henry.

Clydebank now made a change with McGonigle on for Graham.

Talbot’s next attack saw Smith & Wilson combining down the left before Smith lifted a cross into the centre toward Langan but with his back to goal he was crowded out and the ball cleared.

The game’s only goal came in the 69th minute. A cross from the left was headed out by Wilson. It came to Low just outside the area and he slipped a pass through to LITTLE who steered a shot beyond Henry.

The goal seemed to deflate Talbot as much as it lifted Clydebank and the visitors ought to have doubled their lead in the 74th minute. Little flicked the ball into the path of Grant who failed to hit the target – driving wide of goal from a good position.

Tucker now made a double switch with Langan & Smith making way for Gillies & Boylan.

In the 81st minute Talbot made a further change with Black on for Thomson. Black was barely on the park when he picked up what looked a harsh booking for a challenge on Hodge.

Three mins from time Talbot made their final change with Abed coming on for Wardrope.

There had been a few stoppages and the ref added plenty of added time and deep into added time Little nearly grabbed his 2nd but his shot took a slight deflection and went just over the bar.

A disappointing afternoon for Talbot who will have to try and pick themselves up for next week’s trip to Bellsdale to face Beith.

Auchinleck Talbot v Darvel

SECOND HALF NO-SHOW COSTS TALBOT DEARLY

Report: Murray Steele, Video: Lee Conn. Photography: Craig McGhee.

Talbot failed to show up after half-time and paid the price as they slumped to a home defeat against Darvel.

The visitors had the first effort of the match in the 5th minute. A long diagonal pass found Murphy on the right and he took a good first touch to kill it and cut inside but scuffed his shot well wide from 18 yards.

On a day of few clear cut chances Talbot had a half chance to take the lead in the 7th minute. Boyle slid a pass through to Thomson down the left channel and his cross found Boyd beyond the back post where he volleyed it into the side-netting.

In the 11th minute a ball over from the left found Boyd 8 yards out with his back to goal but he was well marshalled and unable to turn and get his shot away.

Sixteen minutes in and McShane switched it out to the left to find Wilson in space but his ball in was gathered at the near post by Glavin.

Talbot’s next attack saw the win a free kick 40 yards out for a foul on Boyd but Talbot failed to make anything of it – Wardrope’s ball in being cleared and Darvel then breaking up field through Moore whose cross hit Slooves in the arm resulting in a Darvel free kick wide on the right. McShane floated it over and Darvel thought they’d taken the lead when Wilson met it and guided a header back across and into the net but the stand side assistant’s flag was up early for offside.

The opening goal arrived in the 27th minute and it went Talbot’s way. The Bot were awarded a free kick midway in Darvel’s half for a foul on Smith. Wardrope took it and passed it down the right channel to find Boyd whose cross was headed home by EWAN THOMSON.

Two mins later a ball from the left found Smith 16 yards out and his low drive was held by Leishman.

McPherson did well in the 36th minute when Darvel countered down the right through Moore with Neil able to match his run allowing Glavin to gather it.

Darvel caught Talbot out a few minutes later with a long ball over the top that found Moore down the left. He squared it across to Wilson who fired wide of target.

In the 41st minute it was all square. Ferguson spotted Glavin off his line and let fly with a wind assisted effort from 40 + yards. It cannoned off the crossbar and MOORE was first to it to drill the rebound home and send the sides in level at the interval.

Early in the 2nd half Smith was harshly cautioned when he went over in the penalty area following a Bot corner from the right. The ref had a decision to make but it didn’t go Talbot’s way.

The 2nd half was becoming increasingly scrappy and Bronsky had his name taken in the 54th minute for a late challenge on Thomson. Talbot now made their first change with Armstrong on for Gillies.

On the hour mark the visitors took the lead with a goal eerily reminiscent of the one conceded late on against Pollok. A ball over the top found Moore down the left and he cut it back to FERGUSON who cut inside and curled a right foot effort inside the far post.

This proved to be his last involvement as he picked up a knock soon after and left to be replaced by Caldwell.

A few minutes later Talbot made a double switch with Boyd & Boyle making way for McMillan & Langan.

In the 72nd minute Cairns picked up a long overdue yellow card for his umpteenth foul but Talbot failed to make anything of the set piece wide on the left.

Darvel now made a further change with Glasgow on for Murphy.

As the game moved into the closing stages Talbot made their final changes with Kennedy & Black coming on for Wardrope and Smith.

Darvel finished the game a man down when Cairns received a 2nd yellow card for a professional foul on Black. The ref ought to have let play continue as Talbot were racing clear up the right but he whistled too early and Darvel went a man down and Talbot got the free kick in their own half.

Talbot huffed and puffed but never really looked like levelling and as the game headed into added time Kennedy picked up a yellow card for a challenge on Barbour with Darvel able to see it out and claim all 3 points.

A disappointing result but Talbot will need to dismiss it to the back of their minds as they’re back in action this Wednesday evening when they travel down the coast to face Troon at Portland Park.

Auchinleck Talbot v St Cadoc’s

SAINTS TAKE THE POINTS AS TALBOT TURN SINNERS

Report: Murray Steele, Photographs: Craig McGhee, Video Highlights: Lee Conn

Defensive lapses cost Talbot dear as they stumbled to defeat in the first home league game of the campaign.

Talbot started well enough with Boyd hitting the bye line down the left and his ball into the centre cut out at the near post.

In the 4th minute Gillies broke forward and sent a left foot effort wide of the left post from 25 yards out.

A minute later Thomson had a half chance when he burst clear on the right – breaking into the penalty area but he got the ball stuck between his feet and the chance was lost.

The visitors settled after a shaky start and had their first chance in the 9th minute. McKillen’s pass up the left found McLaughlan and he fired over the bar.

Talbot then had a half chance of their own. Boyd flicked on a ball down the centre that came to Smith inside the area. He lifted it over the advancing keeper but a defender got back to clear it behind for the corner.

In the 16th minute McMillan drove a cross in from the right that Gillies met in the centre but he couldn’t direct his header on target under pressure.

Glavin was called upon in the 21st minute. Miller squared the ball inside for McLaughlan who steered a low drive straight at Glavin.

Two minutes later a ball from the right found McLaughlan in space on the left of the area. He pulled his shot and it was heading wide of the far post until Muir stuck out a leg to turn it into the net but he was in an offside position.

The visitors were now having the best of it and nearly caught Talbot cold in the 29th minute with a quickly taken free kick. The ball was flighted into the box where McKenzie met it unopposed but Glavin dived low to his right to keep out his header.

A minute later McKenzie passed up a great chance to give St Cadoc’s the lead. The Talbot defence failed to cope with a long shy from the left and it fell to McKenzie inside the 6-yard box but it wouldn’t sit down for him and he lifted it over the bar.

Langan has his name taken in the 34th minute for a foul on McLaughlan.

Talbot rallied in the closing stages of the half but without offering any real goal threat and the sides went in level at the break.

Talbot started the 2nd half on the front foot and had a half chance in the 47th minute when McMillan’s long throw caused panic in the visitors defence. The ball came to Thomson in front of goal who saw his first effort blocked and then his follow up effort blocked in the goal mouth.

A defensive mix-up gifted St Cadoc’s the lead in the 49th minute. A ball over the top saw Glavin come well off his line to gather. However, there was a breakdown in communication between the keeper and Slooves with Glavin leaping over the defender to claim it. He lost the ball in contact and the ball fell to MCKENZIE who steered it into the empty net from just inside the box.

Talbot pushed for an early response and had a half chance in the 52nd minute when McMillan hurled the ball into the centre where McPherson glanced a header wide.

Four minutes later Langan played it to his right to find Smith inside the area whose low drive was held by the keeper.

Talbot passed up a good chance to draw level in the 58th minute. The ball was switched right to left and found Boyd in space inside 10 yards out but his shot flew straight at Truesdale who made the block.

Around the hour mark Miller was booked for an aerial challenge on Boyd that saw Boyd require a lengthy period of treatment on the pitch.

In the 63rd minute Smith was fouled just outside the area resulting in another booking for the visitors. However, Talbot failed to make the most of it, Healy taking it short to Gillies who blazed over the bar.

Talbot nearly conceded again in the 66th minute. Muir whipped a cross over from the right where Slattery met it but sent his free header wide of target.

Talbot now made a change with Wardrope on for McMillan.

In the 69th minute Talbot drew level. Thomson played it across to Boyd on the left of the area and although Truesdale got a touch on his shot, ROSS SMITH had followed up to tuck home the rebound at the far post.

St Cadoc’s now made a change with McManus on for Miller.

The Bot should have taken the lead in the 72nd minute. Wardope fired in a great ball from the right touchline which Boyd met a few yards out but he lifted it over the crossbar.

A minute later Talbot had another chance. Again Wardrope played it in from the right to find Boyd on the left of the area and his powerful strike was kept out by Truesdale at his near post.

With 9 minutes remaining Talbot made a further change with Black on for Gillies and a few minutes later Kennedy replaced Thomson.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until another defensive lapse gifted St Cadoc’s a winner in the 90th minute. There appeared no danger when a ball was clipped over the top but Healy hesitated and MCLAUGHLAN nipped in to rob him of it and stride through before sliding it past Glavin.

The late goal deflated Talbot and the visitors were able to see out added time to secure the win. Talbot will now need to pick themselves up and go again this Saturday when they head through to Airdrie to take on Gartcairn.

“MURRAY’S MATCH REPORT”

Talbot edged out Johnstone Burgh 3-2 at a sunny Beechwood in the Bot’s final preseason fixture.

The Bot made the perfect start taking the lead via a spectacular strike in the 3rd minute.

KIERAN HEALY picked up in midfield and surged forward before hammering a left footed drive from 25 yards that flew in off the underside of the bar.

A few minutes later Smith was unfortunate when he wriggled past a few challenges on the right of the penalty area only to see his final ball across goal cut out.

Burgh had their first good chance in the 10th minute. Dorrans clipped a good ball down the left to find McKenzie racing in behind the defence. He beat Henry to it, taking it wide of target before squaring it into the 6-yard area where Slooves cleared.

It was all square after 14 mins. There seemed no danger when Langan lost possession just inside the Bot half but MCKENZIE eased past Healy’s challenge and drove forward before firing an unstoppable shot inside the right hand post.

The goal lifted the visitors and two minutes later they won a free kick 30 yards from goal. Dorrans took it and curled it over the wall but wide of the right post.

Burgh were having a good spell and had another chance in the 19th minute. Esplin cut the ball back from the right into the path of Dorrans 20 yards out who tried to place it inside the left post only for Henry to turn it round the post.

In the 27th minute Talbot won a shy out in the right that McMillan hurled into the centre. McGowan failed to claim it and Smith managed to force the corner. When Healy delivered it into the centre McGowan flapped at it but Talbot weren’t able to capitalise.

Just after the half hour mark Smith met a ball up the left and laid it off inside to Boyd who fired wide of goal from 20+ yards.

Esplin had his name taken in the 32nd minute for a late challenge on Thomson.

Within a minute Talbot moved back in front. A shy down the left was worked into Smith who burst down the left of the penalty area before squaring it across for FRASER MCMILLAN to tap home at the back post.

Talbot’s next chance came soon after when the Bot won a corner down the left. When it looped over McCracken met it but steered his header over the bar.

Smith had a good chance to put Talbot two clear in the 35th minute. Menzies misjudged the bounce of the ball allowing Smith to get in behind him and race through one on one but the keeper came out on top – getting down to save Smith’s low drive.

Four minutes from half-time Wharton had his name taken for dissent.

A minute before the interval Langan played Boyd in down the right and his ball across goal was cleared behind by Boland. Once again McCracken met Healy’s corner but couldn’t generate the power to test McGowan.

Down the other end Burgh won a corner down the left that was delivered to the far post where Henry had to touch it away before it was cleared.

The half ended with Boland receiving Burgh’s 3rd caution of the evening for a trip 35 yards out. Healy took the free kick but blasted it well over in the final action of the half.

Tucker made a triple switch during the break with McPherson coming on for Park and Lennox on for Langan and Glavin on for Henry.

Burgh levelled for the 2nd time in the 53rd minute. The visitors won a free kick 30 odd yards out which Dorran clipped into the left of the area. A Talbot player got to it but in trying to clear, headed it across the face of goal leaving BROPHY with the simple task of turning it home from close range.

Burgh now made a triple change with Wharton, McCann & McKenzie making way for Paton, McDonald & Brady.

The visitors were now on top and had a half chance to take the lead in the 58th minute. Healy conceded a free kick wide on the right for impeding Boland. Dorrans delivered it into the centre where it was headed clear but came out to Brophy 19 yards out who drilled a shot wide of target.

Burgh now made a further change with Brown on for Boland.

In the 62nd minute Talbot had a chance to regain the lead. McMillan’s arrow like shy from the right found McCracken in the box but he steered his header wide of target.

Both sides found themselves a man down in the 67th minute. Dorrans and Lennox tangled off the ball and after an intervention from the assistant, the referee sent both players to the clubhouse.

Talbot now made further changes with Black and Trialist no. 16 coming on for Thomson & Boyd.

In the 72nd minute Burgh threatened the Bot goal when Brady played it to McDonald on the left and he cut in on his right foot and fired just wide of Glavin’s left post.

Talbot now made a final change with Trialist no. 17 on for McMillan.

Talbot’s no. 17 had a decent effort in the 79th minute. Smith ran across the box from right to left and the ball broke to the trialist in space on the left and he sent a right foot effort just wide of the far post.

Talbot grabbed a late winner in the 86th minute.  A good passing move ended with the ball being switched out to McPherson on the right wing. He got to the bye line and placed a cross onto the head of Talbot’s no.17 who placed his header inside the left post to make it 3-2.

There was time for one more booking, with Healy receiving a caution for a trip late on, but Talbot held out for the win.

Auchinleck Talbot v Whitletts Victoria

MURRAY’S MATCH REPORT & Photos courtesy of CRAIG McGHEE
Talbot ran out comfortable winners in their opening preseason friendly and might have hit double figures with a little luck.
The Bot hit the woodwork for the first time in the 14th minute. Langan whipped over a free kick from the left that Hannah couldn’t gather and it was retrieved by McPherson. He cut it back into the path of Boyd whose low drive rattled the base of the left post.
Talbot came close again in the 22nd minute. Hannah’s attempted clearance was blocked and the ball spun across the face of goal. Boyd got on it and switched it to his left before firing a shot on target but straight at the keeper.
Whitletts only real threat of the afternoon came in the 24th minute. A long shy found its way to Walker on the left of the area and his curling cross was headed behind by McPherson. The corner was taken short then crossed into the near post where Talbot’s trialist keeper missed it but the ball was swept to safety.
Boyd was denied the opener in the 26th minute. Talbot’s no.10 held it up well down the left before crossing to the far post where Boyd’s net bound volley was blocked behind off Murphy.
Talbot took the lead in the 29th minute. A ball up the left pinged off a defender’s head and fell nicely for CONNOR BOYD in the centre and he stroked it past the keeper to make it 1-0.
Ten minutes later he came within a whisker of doubling Talbot’s lead. He showed good pace to burst clear down the left before cutting inside on his right foot and placing a shot for the far corner that hit off the post.
On the stroke of half-time Talbot came close again. Boyle switched it out to Healy on the wing and his cross found Boyd in the centre but his header was turned over the bar by Hannah.
Tucker made 7 changes at the break with Glavin, Black & Schoneville making their debuts along with Armstrong, McCracken, Wardrope and a trialist.
From the off the 2nd half was one-way traffic and Talbot nearly doubled their lead in the 53rd minute. Black played Boyd in down the right and his cut back across goal was turned just wide of target off a defender.
Talbot moved 2-0 ahead in the 57th minute. Boyd played it wide left to find no.8 who swept a dangerous ball across the box that broke to MICHAEL WARDROPE who dragged a shot in off the right post.
In the 63rd minute Talbot grabbed their third. Boyd let a shy from the left come across him before turning and driving for the box. He was halted just outside but the loose ball fell to no.18 who fired a low shot into the bottom corner.
With 20 minutes remaining Talbot won a penalty when Schoneville burst into the area and was up-ended by the keeper. Unfortunately, he landed awkwardly, picking up a nasty injury and had to be helped off the field with Langan returning onto the field. Wardrope took the spot kick but blazed it way over.
Twelve minutes from time Talbot made it 4. Black’s low ball across the face of the area was cut out but it came straight to Talbot’s no.18 whose low drive took a deflection en route to the back of the net.
In the 81st minute Black nearly added his name to the score sheet. He tried his luck from a tight angle only to see it go across the goal line and back off the right hand post.
Five minutes from time Talbot grabbed their 5th goal. A cross from the left found CONNOR BOYD unmarked in the centre and he nodded home.
A minute later Talbot’s no. 8 won a free kick just wide of the area when he was obstructed as he made for the box. Wardrope swept it in at pace and CRAIG MCRACKEN glanced a header into the far corner to make it 6-0.
In the final minute Talbot added a 7th goal. Talbot’s no. 10 cut into the box off the left and dribbled his way past a couple of challenges. He was finally halted but it broke straight to RUARIDH LANGAN who passed it into the net to complete the scoring.
A good work-out for a new look Talbot team with the only downside to the afternoon being Schoneville’s injury and everyone at Beechwood will wish him a swift recovery.

Auchinleck Talbot v Arthurlie

MURRAY’S MATCH REPORT

Talbot made it 3 wins on the spin with two 2nd half goals seeing off Arthurlie in Talbot’s last home game of the season.

With Arthurlie fighting the drop there was plenty of effort on display but a lack of quality in the final third meant that neither goalie was seriously tested in the opening spell.

In the 23rd minute a headed clearance from a Lie free kick landed at the feet of Leyden in space 25 yards out but he fired well-wide of goal and a minute later at the other end Wardrope comfortably cleared the crossbar when he met Smith’s square ball 20 yards out.

The first effort on target came in the 31st minute and produced a top save from Scott to deny Talbot the lead. A shy from the left found Smith inside the area and his shot was heading into the roof of the net til Scott tipped it over the bar.

From the resultant corner Talbot came close again. Lie fielded the initial corner but when the ball came back in a 2nd time from the right it found Samson whose low drive was turned away by Scott’s outstretched leg. Talbot kept the pressure up and a cross to the far post found Wilson but his header went straight at the keeper.

Arthurlie had a chance in the 35th minute. Armstrong bundled Kerr over just outside the area and Leyden drilled the free kick just wide of the left hand post.

Four minutes later the visitors had another chance. Kerr used his pace to get wide of Stafford and hit a cross cum shot into the centre that Leishman blocked at the near post before it was cleared.

Arthurlie finished the half on the front foot but without looking like scoring and the sides went in goal less at the break.

Talbot were caught day dreaming right after the re-start when a ball in behind freed McGregor on the right. He squared it in to Carroll who spurned a great chance to take the lead – taking a fresh air swipe at it.

A minute later Stafford received a yellow card down the other end for throwing the ball away after he disputed the linesman awarding Arthurlie a shy.

Talbot threatened the Lie goal in the 48th minute after Smith forced a corner down the right. When it came in McCracken headed it across the area where it came to Wardrope whose cross just eluded Smith at the left post.

The game became scrappier the longer the half wore on and in the 68th minute Talbot made a triple substitution with Mason, Park & Wardrope making way for Taylor, Lennox & Boyle.

The changes paid off in short order as Talbot took the lead in the 70th minute. Lennox was fouled just wide of the box on the right and Taylor whipped the free kick across goal to the back post. The defence managed to head it clear but only into the path of ROSS SMITH who drilled a low shot past Scott from 16 yards.

Talbot now made a further change with Ballantyne on for Wilson.

In the 74th minute McGregor fired a good cross over from the right towards Carroll in the centre but McCracken did just enough to deflect it away before Stafford completed the clearance.

Talbot doubled their lead in the 76th minute. Taylor’s header sent Samson racing free on the left where he won a corner. Taylor took it and delivered it at pace into the near post where GARETH ARMSTRONG powered a header home.

Arthurlie now made a double switch with Smith & Miller coming on for Carroll & Warnock.

Talbot threatened a 3rd in the 77th minute. Taylor played a good ball in behind the defence to find Samson speeding down the right side of the penalty area but a defender managed to block his shot behind for a corner. Arthurlie couldn’t clear the 1st corner and were forced to concede a 2nd. When this one came in Lennox laid it out right to Taylor who planted a cross right onto the head of the unmarked McCracken who atypically failed to hit the target – heading well wide of goal.

Seven minutes from time Talbot made their final change with Crawford coming on for Stafford.

Deep into added time Arthurlie came close to grabbing a consolation effort. A ball out right found Miller in space and he squared it into McGregor whose low shot was turned round the left post by Leishman. When the corner came over Roulston met it but steered his header over the bar.

Next up for Talbot it’s a Tuesday evening trip through to face Largs before Friday night’s cup final against Clydebank.

Auchinleck Talbot v Cumnock Juniors

MURRAYS MATCH REPORT

Talbot rediscovered their form and it was demolition derby time again at Beechwood as Talbot thumped Cumnock 4-0.

The Bot got off to a slightly nervy start and a defensive mix-up in the 6th minute saw Stafford attempt to head a long ball back into his own area but Leishman had come well out his goal and Stafford had to be quick on his toes to chase down his own header and hook it clear. The ball came out to Dolan on the left and he swung a cross beyond the far post where Boyd directed a tame header at Leishman.

Cumnock were slightly edging it, without offering any real threat, but the game changed Talbot’s way when they took the lead after 18 minutes. Crawford burst forward up the right, past Frye who tried & failed to foul him, before sliding the ball across the box where ROSS SMITH tucked it beyond Barclay from 8 yards.

In the 23rd minute Talbot conceded a free kick just wide of the penalty area after Crawford caught Dolan. McLaughlin took it and went for goal but ballooned his shot well over the bar.

Talbot threatened a 2nd in the 34th minute. Smith skinned Sewell twice in quick succession as he jinked in off the left before firing a low drive on target that Barclay’s legs kept out.

Four minutes later Talbot had a half chance due to hesitancy in the Nock defence. They failed to deal with Crawford’s high ball down the centre and when Samson pressured them in the air the ball broke loose in the area but Mason didn’t react quickly enough to get on the end of it.

Cumnock had a chance to punish Talbot in the 41st minute when Wilson’s clearance was charged down and spun to Rose. He fed it on to the overlapping Sewell but his final ball into the near post was easily dealt with by Leishman and Talbot saw the half out to go in a goal ahead.

There was a change at the interval with Lennox making way for Wardrope in midfield.

Talbot had a great chance to double their lead only 4 minutes after the re-start. Crawford’s angled pass found Smith on the left of the area and when he was tripped the ref pointed straight to the spot. Samson took the spot kick but suffice to say it wasn’t one of his better efforts and Barclay made a comfortable save.

Fortunately Talbot’s heads didn’t go down following the miss and they kept on the front foot.

In the 51st minute Wilson drilled a good ball in from the left to find Mason in the area and his side-footed effort was blocked.

Two minutes later Boyle swung a dangerous cross over from the right to the back post but there were no takers to turn it home.

The Bot were well on top now and following a passage of possession football Boyle slid a good ball through the centre of the Nock defence that Sewell managed to intercept and clear.

On the hour mark Cumnock made a change with Carnwath on for Dolan.

Smith was having a good evening and Talbot’s next attack saw him dribble his way past a couple of defenders down the left of the area only to see his final ball back across goal cut out.

In the 68th minute Armstrong won it in midfield and slid a pass out to his right to find Samson who carried on into the box and tried to slide a low shot past Barclay who saved low to his right.

Talbot made a second change in the 69th minute when Taylor came on in place of Mason.

Cumnock had offered very little since half-time but they did have a promising attack in the 71st minute. Carnwath got free down the right and drilled a low ball across the 6-yard area which Crawford managed to clear.

A minute later Talbot were back on the attack. Taylor’s cross found Wardrope on the left and he in turn fed it to Smith whose ball across goal just went behind the Bot players waiting in the centre.

In the 72nd minute Taylor picked up a yellow card for simulation when he tumbled inside the Nock penalty area.

With 11 minutes remaining Cumnock made a further change with McLean coming on for Wilson.

In the 82nd minute Talbot made sure of the points with their 2nd of the evening. Smith swept a ball in from the left that found ROSS TAYLOR and he cut inside his man before placing a left foot shot inside the right post.

Talbot now made a further change with Ballantyne on for Wilson.

Three minutes from time Talbot had a chance to extend their lead. Samson was sent through on the right and paced into the area but his low drive couldn’t beat Barclay.

With fog descending and thickening by the second the closing stages saw visibility reduced to the level of guesswork.

In the 90th minute Ballantyne lifted a cross over from the left and KIER SAMSON rose to head it inside the right post to make it 3-0 to Talbot.

Deep into added time Talbot added a fourth as ROSS SMITH raced through and placed a low drive beyond Barclay to make it 4-0.

A very good win for Talbot that sees them climb back above Clydebank in the table. Next up for Talbot it’s the first of a double header against Arthurlie as they travel to Barrhead on Wednesday evening before the Lie come through to Beechwood this Saturday.
