Auchinleck Talbot v Glenafton Athletic

Talbot extended their lead at the top of the table with thanks to a hard fought derby win over Glenafton.
Talbot dominated the opening period & had a couple of half chances to take an early lead. Hyslop bent a good ball over from the right to find G Wilson in front of goals but the ball broke off him & ran through to McGarrity.
Hyslop created the next chance too, clipping the ball over the defence for the run of S Wilson. He was challenged before he could shoot but the ball fell kindly to Latta who shoved his effort wide of the post under pressure from Cairns.
S Wilson would have been clean through on the keeper in the 12th min after a one-two with Young but Butch’s final pass was too heavy.
G Wilson came close to the opener in the 14th min. Milliken intercepted the ball just the Glens box & fed a quick pass through to G Wilson who knocked it past the advancing keeper but wide of the right post.
The Glens 1st look at goal came after 19 mins when McGuffie forced a corner on the left. Hay drove it in & McCann glanced a header well wide of target.
Talbot won a free kick in a dangerous area in the 24th min when G Wilson was tripped just outside the box. Hyslop’s shot smacked into the wall & spun out to S Wilson on the right of the area. He didn’t make the best of connections but managed to steer his shot inside the left post. The goal should have stood but bizarrely was chalked off for an offside call only the standside linesman spotted.
Justice was done though a minute later as Talbot took the lead & a cracking goal it was too.
G WILSON outpaced Meikle down the left before rifling an unstoppable shot over McGarrity to put Talbot 1-0 ahead.
Glenafton now began to come into the game & Cairns tested Leishman with a long range effort.
There was a momentary panic in the Bot defence when McGuffie got in behind on the right & stood a cross up into the centre where Leishman failed to take it under the challenge of McCann. It came out to Andrew on the left & Latta did well to block his shot behind. When Hay’s corner came over McCann nodded it wide of the far post.
Talbot’s rocky spell continued when Latta lost his footing inside the area. McGill pounced on the loose ball & fired a low shot on target that Leishman smothered.
Right on the stroke of halftime Talbot almost gifted the Glens an equaliser. White misjudged a high ball down the middle as it bounced in behind him he was outmuscled by McCann who prodded a shot on target that Leishman gathered at the 2nd time of asking.
Talbot started the 2nd half sluggishly & their cause wasn’t helped when the ref harshly booked Milliken for an innocuous challenge. The Bot were then temporarily reduced to ten men when McCracken left the field for treatment & the Glens nearly took advantage. A cross into the centre skidded off Hyslop & landed at Andrew whose low drive was blocked by Pope.
Glenafton were on top & they forced a string of corners around the hour mark but could find no way through the Bot defence. From the last of these corners Talbot looked to counterattack through Milliken but he was hauled down by McChesney who received a caution.
A minute later he was joined in the book by Cairns who scythed down Boyd.
Talbot settled their nerves with a 2nd goal in the 65th minute. BOYD capitalised on Meikle’s error to nip in behind the centre half & carry on into the box before coolly passing it inside McGarrity’s right post.
The two Wilson brothers were involved in Talbot’s next chance. Steven robbed McGuffie of the ball before releasing Graham down the left and he saw his shot turned behind at the near post.
Glenafton made a change in the 73rd min bringing Marlow on for Cairns & Talbot soon made their first change with Shankland replacing G Wilson.
Tucker had to make a further change in the 79th min when Latta limped off to be replaced by Love.
Talbot largely controlled the game in the closing stages, though McGill forced a decent stop from Leishman with five mins remaining.
Menzies let frustration get the better of him in the final minute and picked up a silly caution for booting the ball away.
This win sets Talbot up nicely for the weekend visit of Pollok.Talbot – Leishman Latta Pope McCracken White Boyd Young Hyslop Milliken G Wilson S WilsonSubs – Shankland Love Findlay Johnstone

Cumnock Juniors v Auchinleck Talbot

Cumnock Juniors 2 Auchinleck Talbot 3 (H-T 0-1) | Auchinleck Talbot Forum

Talbot beat Cumnock for the 3rd time this season, and this was the sweetest of the 3 for the Bot support as it secured their place in the West of Scotland final & was sealed by an injury time winner.
The game had all the intensity you would expect from the fixture & the ref was called on as early as the 2nd minute when Burns looked to flatten Hyslop with a reckless tackle. To the disbelief of the large Bot support, the ref awarded the free kick to Cumnock.
Endeavour was triumphing over football, with both sides battling for the ball over the pitch, and a stiff breeze not aiding matters.
Cumnock won a free kick in a good area in the 10th minute when Watt was fouled out on the touchline. Scott whipped a dangerous free kick in from the right which Leishman punched clear.
Talbot put together a good passing move in the 12th minute. Hyslop squared it for Pope who fed it up the left to Graham Wilson. He sent it across the box to Steven Wilson who touched it onto the path of Shankland who hit a low shot straight at Johnston.
The 1st goal came in the 18th minute after a bad error from Woods. The Nock right-back needlessly tripped Graham Wilson just inside the penalty area & the ref pointed straight to the spot. GRAHAM WILSON buried the penalty inside the right post to put Talbot 1-0 ahead.
Cumnock weren’t getting much joy out the Bot defence but they did threaten an equaliser in the 27th min. Watt timed his run in behind the defence & when stymied the ball broke to Malone whose shot was heading on target until blocked by the outstretched leg of McGoldrick.
Two minutes later Talbot tested the Nock keeper. Hyslop, dominant in the air all day, flicked the ball into the path of G Wilson on the right of the area & he tried a curler to the far corner which Johnston saved.
Talbot made an injury enforced substitution on the half hour mark when McGoldrick left the field & Young came on. This led to a reshuffle, with Steven White dropping into defence.
There wasn’t much to get excited about in the remaining quarter of an hour with Talbot looking comfortable in their lead, the only scare coming a minute before the interval from a set piece. The ball was driven in from the left looking for Murphy but the Cumnock centre-half couldn’t get his head on it with Leishman stranded off his line.
The 2nd half was only a minute old when Esplin talked himself into the book.
Steven Wilson had a half chance in the 49th minute. Hyslop flicked the ball into the centre & when the defence failed to clear their lines it came out to Wilson 15 yards out but he snatched at it & volleyed well wide of goal.
Lundie picked up Cumnock’s 2nd booking in the 54th minute for a barge into the back of G Wilson resulting in a Bot free kick 35 yards out. Shankland succeeded in hitting the target but Johston was well positioned to make a comfortable save.
Cumnock made the game’s first change in the 57th minute when Quinn came on for Malone and a minute later G Wilson landed in the ref’s notebook when penalised for an aerial challenge.
The game was now swinging Cumnock’s way & Watt had an opportunity to level in the 59th minute. White misjudged a high ball at the edge of the area & when it bounced over him Watt flashed a shot wide of the right post.
It was all square in the 61st minute. Watt spread the ball out to Scott on the right wing & he knocked it into the near post where MONTGOMERIE dispatched it past Leishman.
Talbot made a 2nd change after 67 mins with Milliken coming on for Lyle, with Boyd dropping back to right-back but before the sub had a chance to touch the ball Cumnock moved in front.
Once again, Scott was the provider, speeding down the right before cutting the ball back across the box. McCracken deflected it out but it came straight to ESPLIN who steered a low shot into the bottom right corner.
Cumnock should have been down to ten men in the 69th minute when Watt lunged into a reckless, late tackle on McCracken but the ref felt it only merited a booking.
In a role reversal of the 1st half Cumnock were now looking comfortable defending a one goal lead with Talbot chasing the game without threatening the Nock goal.
That was until the 78th minute when the Bot drew level thanks to a well taken goal. Boyd headed the ball towards the Cumnock box where Shankland hooked it on into the area. GRAHAM WILSON ran onto it & smacked a perfectly aimed volley over the keeper into the roof of the net to make it 2-2.
The goal galvanised Talbot who produced a couple of half chances in the next few minutes. Firstly Milliken skinned Woods for pace down the left only to see his low cross smothered at the near post by Johnston. Moments later Hyslop laid the ball off to Boyd on the overlap & he paced free on the right & drilled a low ball across goal which forced Murphy into a last gasp clearance.
Shankland had a chance to win it with 5 minutes remaining. Hyslop opened the defence up with a disguised pass to the left that eluded Graham Wilson but landed right at the feet of Shankland on the right of the area, however he got no weight behind his shot & Johnston was able to save to his right.
As the game moved into the closing stages & penalties loomed Cumnock looked to have the upper hand as Talbot conceded a couple of needless free kicks deep in their own half which Leishman & the defence dealt with.
However, in the 2nd minute of injury time it was Talbot who had the last word. Pope flighted a ball out to the right of the penalty area which Hyslop headed across goal & SHANKLAND beat Lundie to it to head home from close range, winning the game for Talbot & sending most of the crowd home happy.
This was a hard fought win for the Bot who now face Hurlford at Newlandsfield in the West final at the end of May. At this stage of the season every game’s a big one, and next up for Talbot is another derby encounter when they host Glenafton on Monday night in the league looking to move another 3 points closer to retaining the league.

Troon v Auchinleck Talbot

Troon 2 Talbot 1 (HT 1-0) | Auchinleck Talbot Forum

Talbot’s topsy turvy season continued as they went down to defeat at Troon.
It was Talbot who made all of the early running and the Bot had a chance to take the lead inside 2 minutes. Wilson sped down the left & fired a low ball across the area which Young ran onto but he steered his shot well wide of target.
Two minutes later Semple kept Talbot out with a magnificent save. Once again Wilson got free on the left & whipped a cross into the near post. Milliken bulleted a header on target but the keeper made a great stop at his right post to keep it out.
Talbot’s next chance came in the 8th minute. Pope chipped the ball into the area where Wilson flicked it into the path of Boyd. He teed it up for Milliken whose low drive took a deflection & went past the far post for a corner kick.
Semple produced another top save to deny Talbot the lead in the 10th minute. Hyslop slipped the ball into Milliken on the left of the area & he twisted & turned onto his right foot before rifling a shot at goal that Semple tipped onto the crossbar.
The home side were forced into a change in the 13th minute when Keenan fell awkwardly & had to be replaced by McCrae.
Milliken passed up a good chance to put Talbot in front in the 23rd minute. Boyd slid a pass in behind the defence to send Milliken through on the left. He looked favourite to beat Semple to the ball but the keeper raced 30 yards out to get there first & clear the danger.
This proved costly as within a minute the home side took the lead with their 1st effort on target. Lyle intercepted a ball through the middle but gave the ball away 30 yards out. It was played to ARMSTRONG on the left & he hammered an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that flew inside Leishman’s right post.
Talbot picked themselves up and continued to enjoy the bulk of the play but without being able to breach the Troon defence. Wilson sent a dangerous ball into the centre from the left wing that Collins sliced over his own bar and then Milliken broke down the left & fired a good ball across to the far post but there were no takers.
As the half wore on Troon came more into it & McGoldrick had to look sharp in the 40th minute to get across & block McGill’s shot at goal.
The Bot’s hopes took a blow early in the 2nd half when they conceded a soft goal in the 51st minute. There looked to be no danger when a high ball went down the right but the ball skited off the top of Lyle’s head & came straight across to FORSYTH, who clean through on goal, took full advantage & rolled the ball under Leishman to make it 2-0.
The 2nd goal knocked the stuffing out of Talbot & with Troon content to sit on their lead the game stalemated with nothing much happening in the final third.
Tucker made two changes as Talbot chased the game, firstly Shankland came on for Boyd and then Love replaced Latta.
Wilson picked up a caution in the 73rd minute for a late challenge.
Talbot set up an action packed ending to the game when they pulled a goal back in the 80th minute. Shankland raced up the right before playing it across the face of goal for MILLIKEN to place inside the right post.
Two minutes later there was a scramble in the Troon goal mouth. Love won a corner & when Shankland delivered it, McCracken guided a header back across goal. Pope tried to force it home from close range but there were enough bodies on the line to block him & clear it to safety.
Collins was cautioned in the 87th minute for a late challenge that resulted in a Bot free kick 35 yards from goal. Shankland squared it for Pope to hit but his low drive went well wide of target.
As the game moved into injury time there were close calls at both ends. Troon almost extended their lead when McGill raced clear of McGoldrick on the left. He carried it into the area but Leishman was swiftly off his line to dive at his feet & smother the ball.
Deep into injury time, Milliken came within a whisker of levelling. He raced onto a through ball down the left of the area & drilled a low shot past Semple that came off the inside of the right post & out to safety.
A disappointing night for Talbot who started the game on fire but fizzled out once Troon got their 2nd goal. There’s no time for dwelling on the result though as Talbot’s next outing is a visit to Lugar to face old foes Cumnock in the semi-final of the West.Troon – Semple, Armstrong, Keenan, McKnight, Collins, Chatham, Harvey, Spence, Forsyth, Muir, McGill

Kilbirnie Ladeside v Auchinleck Talbot

Kilbirnie Ladeside 2 Auchinleck Talbot 1 (HT 1-0) | Auchinleck Talbot Forum

A below par Talbot came out second best to Kilbirnie in this league fixture & could have little complaint over the result.
The home side should have taken the lead in the 4th minute. Young conceded a free kick out on the right which Miller delivered to the far post. Anderson laid it back across goal for Forde who somehow put it wide from 6 yards out.
Graham Wilson had his name taken in the 5th minute for leading with his arm in an aerial challenge.
The Blasties threatened the Bot goal in the 11th minute when they were awarded a soft looking free kick out on the left. It was delivered to the far post where Grehan headed it back across goal, forcing McGoldrick to slice it behind.
Kilbirnie were piling on the pressure & mounting up the corners & one almost came off for them in the 14th minute. Grehan met a corner from the right & his header for goal was glanced on by Forde but cleared at the far post by White.
Talbot’s first effort at goal came in the 17th minute when Young sliced a shot wide from 20 yards.
The Bot goal had a lucky escape in the 23rd minute. Anderson sped into the box down the left & laid it across to the back post where Gold fired wide of target from close range.
Steven Wilson had an opportunity to give Talbot the lead a minute later when he ran onto Young’s cross from the left wing but he lifted his free header over the bar.
As the half wore on, it looked as though Talbot had weathered the early storm, but with 3 minutes remaining Kilbirnie took the lead. MCALEER raced onto a good diagonal ball & cut inside past Young before curling a first time shot in off the right hand post to give Kilbirnie a 1-0 lead at the interval.
The 2nd half was only a minute old when Hyslop had his name taken. He went over in the penalty area when cutting across the box but the ref judged him to have taken a dive & produced a yellow card.
Graham Wilson hit the target in the 50th minute. He drilled a decent shot inside the right hand post from 20 yards but Hughes was well positioned to make the save.
Kilbirnie doubled their advantage in the 55th minute with a well taken goal. Anderson sent the ball out left to Forde who swung it across to the far corner of the 6-yard area where GREHAN side-footed it into the corner of the net.
Anderson picked up a yellow card in the 56th minute, and perhaps was lucky it wasn’t red, as he went in very late on White.
Tucker made a change in the 66th minute when Shankland came on in place of Boyd.
Kilbirnie also made a change in the 72nd minute with Turner on in place of Grehan.
Talbot were thrown a lifeline with quarter of an hour remaining. Staunton had been guilty of a few dubious aerial challenges & when he jumped into Graham Wilson with his arm extended, the ref pointed to the spot & booked him.
GRAHAM WILSON took the spot kick & sent Hughes the wrong way to make it 2-1.
Kilbirnie were showing signs of cracking under pressure & had two players cautioned in quick succession. Firstly, Turner for dissent following the award of a free kick to Talbot and then Hughes for time-wasting.
Talbot pushed bodies forward in the closing stages but never really fashioned a clear cut opening & almost lost a 3rd on the counter-attack in the 84th minute. McGoldrick was beaten to the ball by Turner who raced into the area but sent his shot wide of the right post under pressure from McCracken.
Any hopes of a late fight back were ended with a minute of time remaining when Graham Wilson received his 2nd yellow card of the evening leaving Talbot down to 10 men.
Not one of Talbot’s better nights but the Bot will be hoping to bounce back with a West of Scotland quarter-final against Clydebank to look forward to this Saturday.Kilbirnie Ladeside – Hughes, Rafferty, Bennett, Staunton, Houston, Anderson, Gold, Miller, Grehan, Forde, McAteerSubs – Meechan, Brannan, TurnerAuchinleck Talbot – Leishman, White, Lyle, McGoldrick, McCracken, Boyd, Young, Hyslop, Graham Wilson, Milliken, Steven Wilson

Glenafton Athletic v Auchinleck Talbot

Clydebank

Auchinleck Talbot v Cambuslang Rangers

Butch opens the scoring
Butch opens the scoring

Talbot booked their place in the last 8 of the West of Scotland with a bit to spare as they breezed past Cambuslang Rangers at Beechwood.
The writing was on the wall for the visitors as soon as the 4th minute when Talbot took the lead in the 1st meaningful attack of the match. Love raced to the bye line down the right & whipped a cross over to the back post. Gillies brought it down & fired a shot on target which Lynch did well to save but YOUNG was following up to place the rebound into the roof of the net.
Within a minute Talbot nearly doubled their lead. Gillies jousted in the air when Leishman launched it down field & although he didn’t win it, he did enough to prevent Newman heading it clear & the ball ran through to Shankland on the right of the penalty area who directed a shot inches wide of the far post.
Only the width of the woodwork prevented Talbot extending their lead in the 7th minute. Young’s square pass found Pope in space & he played it up the left to Shankland. He jinked inside his man into the area & curled an ambitious effort from a tight angle that had the keeper well beaten but came back off the face of the bar.
Talbot continued to control the game but it took until the 19th minute to double their lead.

cam2
GILLIES bent a curling effort from the left, just outside the area, toward the far corner which should have been saved by Lynch but the ball skipped up off the surface just before the keeper & squirmed over his trailing arm into the back of the net.
Any dream of a Cambuslang fightback ended in the 24th minute when Talbot killed the tie off with a 3rd goal. Lyle knocked a good cross over that Shankland gathered just beyond the far post. He angled it back into the area where Young coolly stepped over the ball & his dummy allowed POPE the time & space to fire a low drive past Lynch.
The visitors had to make a change on the half hour mark. Brogan picked up an injury and had to be replaced by A Scanlan.
Gillies almost grabbed his 2nd in the 34th minute. He twisted & turned just outside the 6-yard area before firing for goal, only to see his shot deflected just over the bar.
Cambuslang had offered little in attack but should have pulled a goal back in the 36th minute. Ryan Scanlan won a corner down the left & when it was delivered into the centre, Newman met it unchallenged but sent his free header straight at Leishman.

Davie Gillies celebrates after second goal
Davie Gillies celebrates after second goal

Talbot ended the 1st half on the front foot & were unlucky not to add to their lead in the last minute of the half. Shankland whipped a quality in swinging corner over from the left that forced Lynch into a block at his near post. It came out to Young on the 6-yard line & his effort at goal was deflected past for another corner. This time Shankland hit it deeper & McCracken met it just beyond the far post but steered a free header over the bar.

Tucker made a change before a ball was kicked in the 2nd half, with Findlay on for Lyle.
With the comfort of a 3 goal cushion Talbot were on easy street & might have extended their lead in the 52nd minute. Love nicked possession off a defender 25 yards out & slid a great ball through to Steven Wilson. He had the chance to go one on one with the keeper but took a heavy touch & it ran away from him out for a goal kick.
One minute later Cambuslang gift wrapped Talbot’s fourth. Newman looked to be in control as he tried to shield it back to Lynch but he left it to the keeper & GILLIES nicked in to take advantage of their mix-up to steer it into the empty net.

cam4
Boydy and Shankers point it out

Lynch produced a quality save a minute later to prevent further damage to the visitors. Shankland raced onto a ball over the top of the static defence & his shot was heading into the bottom corner until Lynch dived to his left to turn it round the post.
Love had a good chance to add to Talbot’s lead in the 55th minute. Steven Wilson broke down the right & hit the bye line before cutting it back to Love who placed a shot just wide of the right post from the opposite end of the 6-yard box.
Tucker now made a change with Hyslop on for Young.
It was still all Talbot & shortly after coming on Hyslop saw his short from distance held by Lynch & then in the 64th minute Pope drilled a low shot straight at the keeper from just inside the area.
Gillies had a good opportunity to claim his hat-trick in the 69th minute. Shankland floated an inch perfect cross in from the left to the back post where Gillies met it, only to direct his volley over the bar.
Talbot now made a further change with Graham Wilson on for Boyd.
With 10 minutes to go Talbot completed the scoring with a perfectly executed counter-attack. Cambuslang had a corner on the right that they knocked to the back post. McCracken turned defence into attack with one ball when he hit it from his own box to find Love racing down the right touchline. He made tracks before cutting the ball back to HYSLOP who placed a great finish behind Lynch to make it 5-0.
Five minutes from time Cambuslang threatened a consolation goal. McBeth spun inside the box to turn away from McGoldrick & Leishman did well to turn his shot over the bar from 6 yards out.

Talbot on the attack
Talbot on the attack

Talbot kept pressing & threatening but couldn’t add to their tally and the game ended 5-0 to the delight of the home fans & the relief of Cambuslang.
Next up for Talbot is a crucial mid-week double header in the league, as they visit Glenafton & Kilbirnie before facing Clydebank at Beechwood next Saturday in the next round of the West.

Auchinleck Talbot v Dalry Thistle

Talbot rotated their squad to good effect as they hammered Dalry 8-0 in the 2nd rd of the Ayrshire Weekly Press cup.
Talbot started as they meant to go on, with a goal within 2 mins. Shankland popped the ball in behind for LOVE to run onto & he placed it beyond Hewitt.
Dalry had to make an early change when Stewart limped off to be replaced by McLaughlin.
It was one way traffic & Love nearly added to the lead in the 9th min but he steered Shankland’s cross wide of target.
Hyslop wasted a good chance to extend the lead when sent through on goal by Steven Wilson. He scuffed his shot & it went tamely at Hewitt.
The chances came one after another, with Love testing the keeper twice and Gillies also working the keeper.
The only surprise was that Dalry held out until the 32nd min before conceding again. Pope hit a superb diagonal pass to S Wilson & he threaded it through for GILLIES to bury it beyond Hewitt.
Dalry were under the cosh & the pressure told just before half time. Shankland’s corner was flicked goal ward by Hyslop & although Hewitt saved his header, GILLIES pounced to nod home the rebound.
The 2nd half was only 2 mins old when Talbot grabbed their 4th. HYSLOP met a corner from the left to glance a header into the roof of the net.
It was 5 after 53 mins. A slick move saw Gillies touch it into Love whose short pass sent HYSLOP through on the keeper. Hewitt did well to block his shot but Hyslop kept his cool to dispatch the rebound.
Tucker made a change on the hour mark with Young replacing Hyslop and the sub made an early impact, whipping a ball in from the right touchline for GILLIES to volley home for his hat-trick.
Talbot’s 7th of the night came after 68 mins. Shankland swung in a dangerous cross & LOVE converted with a diving header.
With 20 mins remaining Talbot made a double switch with Milliken & G Wilson on for Boyd & Gillies.
Graham Wilson passed up a decent chance in the 80th min. Love played in Milliken & he squared it to Wilson who took too long to get his shot away & saw it blocked by Brown.
The scoring was completed in the 86th min. S Wilson found Milliken free on the right of the area & he drilled a shot on target. Hewitt saved at his near post but it came straight back to Milliken who laid it across goal for SHANKLAND to finish from close range.
